Disabled surfers have a ball at Mollymook

WORKING AS A TEAM: Lya Kiviaru , Paula Saiz, Tonya Flowers with Stella Flowers and her dog at the beach. What a difference a day makes. It was 45 degreeson Friday, then 20 degreesthe next day, but the surfing was still hot at Mollymook on the Saturday morning.

Once the early morning rain had cleared by 9am and the small city of marquees had been erected by the army of South Coast Disabled Surfers Association volunteers, it was all systems go with participants coming from as far away as Camden and the ACT.

The surfing conditions turned out to be perfect. Offshore three-foot peelers with the sun starting to peep through, greeted the 145 participants, carers and volunteers who turned up for the 5th annual Disabled Surfers day at Mollymook.

As with all DSA events around Australia, surfers were helped by individual teams made up of 8 to 10 volunteers per team with 2-3 team leaders.

Blake Neilsen from Ulladulla, again took out the hotly contested “toss the sandbag”competition with a perfect 10/10 score making it threeyears in a row.

The Most Inspirational Award was deservedly won by Katrina Ford, who never looked back once she hit the water. Wearing her specially DSA designed ‘Surfsock’, replacing the need for restrictive wetsuits that are most cumbersome for spinal damaged participants, ‘Kat’ carved in her threesurfing heats.

Wave of the Day award was deservedly shared between Krystal Browning and the ACT’s Dylan Schwarz.

Best tube of the morning went to Peter Gilford with a three-second effort.

Wipe Out of the Day deservedly went to Mollymook’s Eric Goulding – who actually could have won the award twice due to his skill in “going down the mine”.

The major award for the day, the “best surfer trophy”, was won by Jennifer Froude. Jennifer was part of a team of fourprofoundly deaf participants who collectively enlivened the day’s proceedings with their ongoing excitement after each of them caught a wave.

All participants were then awarded a surfing medallion and a bag of goodies for their daring surf deeds.

Branch president Mr Ian Picton ended the prize-giving by recognising the great material support given by Bunnings and in particular that of Kent and Juanita Saunders and the team from Southern Man Surf Shop.

“It was especially pleasing again to see so many student volunteers, with special mention of Nowra Christian School and Ulladulla High School supplementing the brilliant Ulladulla Board Riders in attendance. Our next twoevents are at Thirroul on December 5with Gerroa on Sunday,March 20,”Mr Picton said today.

“Don’t forget next year marks our 30th anniversary since the Disabled Surfers Association first started with a special event to be held at Collaroy on Saturday,February 27,”Mr Picton said.
