CENTURY MAN: Ben Threlfall led the Western Waves to victory against Mallee Murray with an unbeaten 142 at Warracknabeal on Sunday.CAPTAIN Ben Threlfall fired off an unbeaten 142 in the Western Waves’11-run victory against Mallee Murray in the Victorian Country Cricket League Under 21 Regional competitionon Sunday.
The West Warrnambool top-order bat followed up last week’s half-century with another commanding performanceto steer his side to a strong total at Warracknabeal.
The 19-year-old opener defended strongly in the early part of the Waves’ innings, contending with a soft wicket, but finished the day with 16 fours and five sixes as his sidefinished with 6-245.
“We knew that if we got through with the new ball, the runs would come later on,” Threlfallsaid.
“We were 2-40 off about 20 overs, so we started pretty slowly…(but) midway through the innings, Hamish Withers came in …and we got a little partnership together, and we started to get on top of the bowlers from there.
“The ground was short straight and longer wide, so we just backed ourselves to hit straight for our boundaries.”
The pair put on 72 for the third wicket, before Withers was caught on 29.
But Threlfall was able to keep the momentum going with number five batsmanSam Younghusband (32 runs),while Angus Uwland at number seven made a 30-run cameo as the Waves put on 96in the final 11 overs.
Mallee Murray started strongly in its chase, making 84 off the first 12 overs, despite Tyler Fowler taking two wickets during that period.
Horsham’sJosh Carroll was able to stem the flow a little.
But with Mallee Murray needing just 28 runs from the final seven overs with four wickets in hand, it was Uwland’s bowling at the death that secured the win for the Waves.
He took two of his four wickets in his second spell, leaving Mallee Murray stranded on 234 with three overs to spare.
Barwon, which was undefeated across both rounds, will represent the western part of the state in the final.
It will now takeon top eastern team Gippsland on December 13.
